Australia: Scientists vs community in battle over river red gums
(06 Oct 2008 00:00:01 CST)
Stock and Land: More than 40 scientists have signed an open letter to Victorian Premier John Brumby urging an end to mismanagement of water-starved river red gum forests along the Murray. The letter calls on the Government to accept advice that it protect 103,000 hectares of forest, including creating five new national parks and establishing a regional park from Wodonga to past Mildura. But an angry rally in Echuca yesterday heard an opposing view: that timber workers, farmers and hunters also ...

Wastewater Treatment Challenges the Food Sector in Anticipation of the Water Framework Directive
()
Ashley Shepherd, UK sales manager at pumping specialist, Watson-Marlow Bredel, talks about the importance of accurate effluent treatment for the food manufacturing sector in the context of the Water Framework Directive.
The process of wastewater treatment is set to change forever with the introduction of the Water Framework Directive, which aims to rationalise and update existing water legislation, as well as improve standards of protection for the water environment. While the food manufacturing industry currently operates under fairly stringent restrictions, they are set to become much st...

Watson-Marlow Peristaltic Pumps in Breakthrough Application
()
South West Water is using a peristaltic pump from Watson-Marlow Bredel for dosing coagulant into raw reservoir water for purification purposes. It is thought to be the first time peristaltic technology has been used on a coagulant application, certainly within the southwest region.
Originally the plant, near Falmouth in Cornwall, employed two conventional diaphragm pumps, however, suffering from blocking due to crystallisation, it was decided to investigate alternatives for the critical process of coagulant dosing. Following discussion with Watson-Marlow, South West Water took two 520DuN/R2...

Peristaltic Technology Delivers Trouble-free Lime Slurry Metering at Three Stage WTW
()
Peristaltic pumps supplied by Watson-Marlow Bredel are delivering trouble-free, 24-hour operation of lime slurry metering at the Blackmoorfoot WTW near Huddersfield.
Serving over 400,000 people, the WTW at Blackmoorfoot was the first full-size, three-stage water treatment works to be built by Yorkshire Water. Pumping around 30Ml of water a day, the three-stage process involves flotation, first-stage filtration and subsequent manganese and chlorine removal in three distinct stages. This has been successful in treating upland Pennine waters and, as a result, water quality throughout the area ...

- Will water be the oil of tomorrow? - With the water issue making
the headlines of so many newspapers as the Water Summit took place in
Mexico in March, one could have hardly ignored the extent to which the
most precious liquid on earth is becoming scarce. But long before this
summit, the trend hadn't gone unnoticed by executives at Pictet Asset
Management, who from their home base in Geneva - next to packaged water
giant Nestlé and close to Lyon, home of the world's first water
concession in 1853 - decided to launch in 2000 the Water Fund, the
world's first fund completely invested in water-related equities.
