Human Milk And Blood Serum SRMs For Contaminant Measurements Issued By National Institute Of Standards And Technology

Responding to scientists' need to measure organic contaminants in human body fluids, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has recently made four new Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) available for purchase. Developed in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the human milk and serum SRMs have certified levels of contaminants, including flame retardants and pesticides, commonly found in the U.S. population.

Loss of world's seagrass beds seen accelerating

Reuters: The world's seagrass meadows, a critical habitat for marine life and profit-maker for the fishing industry, are in decline due to coastal development and the losses are accelerating, according to a new study. Billed as the first comprehensive global assessment of seagrass losses, the study found 58 percent of seagrass meadows are declining and the rate of annual loss has accelerated from about 1 percent per year before 1940 to 7 percent per year since 1990. United Kingdom: Dog owners warned of toxic algae in ponds due to heatwave

Telegraph: In the West Midlands dead fish were found floating in a park due to oxygen depletion from the algae and the fountains in Trafalgar Square had to be closed because of the green slime. It has also caused trouble for gardeners and fishermen. 869 species extinct, 17,000 threatened with extinction

Mongabay: Nearly 17,000 plant and animal species are known to be threatened with extinction, while more than 800 have disappeared over the past 500 years, reports the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). WABAG Puts Algiers' Main Wastewater Treatment Plant Back into Operation

WABAG is pleased to announce the conclusion of another prestigious project in Algeria. Baraki, which has a capacity of 900,000pe, is Algiers' main wastewater treatment plant and the second largest facility of its type in the country.
The ambitious contract allocated to WABAG involved the revitalisation of the entire existing plant at an investment cost of about €50 million.

On June 9 an agreement was signed marking the start of a joint research programme that will look at new technologies relating to water recycling, membrane processes for desalination systems and recycling processes and the reduction of sludge in wastewater recycling plants.
